Fluorescence
All Olympus VS120 fluorescence system components are designed to produce a fully automated, high-speed 16-bit multi-channel fluorescence scanning system with excellent flexibility and simple operation. During the acquisition, hundreds of individual fluorescence images are simultaneously compressed without any loss in quality and stitched together to create a seamless, magnified version of the slide. The VS120 fluorescence system is also capable of scanning large specimens in multiple z-planes: at each position of the sample, a series of fluorescence images is acquired at various focus positions. Resulting fluorescence z-stacks are stored within the images and can be focused virtually on the monitor. As a result, the Olympus VS120 system enables thorough examination, without any risk of bleaching or damage to the cells.
Tissue microarrays
The VS120 slide loader, the SL100, offers the capacity to process large quantities of slides, with simple initial setup. Without the need for any user interaction, the virtual slides are automatically created and stored for subsequent analysis and review. As such, the VS120 provides high throughput capabilities, thus increasing laboratory efficiency. Through the automation of the slide loading process, researchers are free to continue with other experimental protocols, with the knowledge that their slides are being scanned in a safe, efficient and accurate manner.

The functionality of the VS120 system can be expanded with a dedicated tissue microarray (TMA) software module, facilitating acquisition and simple analysis of tissue microarrays. This enables the separate documentation of each core, accurately recording slide and core reference for traceability. In addition, documents are stored automatically and uploaded to the NIS SQL database.
Conferencing within NIS
A conference can be easily scheduled, with up to 200 participants. The moderator or speaker can guide participants through the displayed specimen, simultaneously on all clients’ monitors. Furthermore, the directing function can be forwarded to any desired participant and all aspects of the conference can be recorded and recalled for later review and use, such as teaching. Conferencing for up to 5 clients is included as standard in the Net-Image-Server solution. This can however be extended to allow for simultaneous access of up to 200 users.
VS-JP2CNV (JPEG2000 conversion)
The Olympus VS120 software can directly scan into VSI, Tiff and BigTiff formats. It is also possible to convert standard image formats into JPEG2000 images after acquisition, which dramatically reduces the file size. Furthermore, the system is compatible with many different types of clinical information and data management systems, as well as the optional cross linking capabilities provided by Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) and Hospital Information system (HIS).
VS-Netcam
VS-Netcam allows convenient sharing of live VS120 images between several users via the Internet. This feature is especially useful in a cleanroom environment, for example, allowing you to share observations with colleagues, regardless of their physical location. Any network user can connect to your VS120 PC and visualize the same image in real time using a simple Internet browser.
VS - CNSL (consulting tool)
The consulting module for the VS120 adds an intuitive user workflow, where image documents can be selected and commented on. These can then be forwarded to the relevant personnel for review, or to gain a second opinion. This offline communication route enables different people to distribute information and combine individual case results. The initiating user defines the people involved, keeping them up to date with notification emails, as required. All comments and annotations are securely stored together with the image data.
